I am really sad to note the passing of one of Scotland´s best known golf journalists. The Herald´s Dougie Lowe passed away at the weekend following a devastating illness.
The news came out of the blue as a heavy blow and sparked all the good memories I have of Dougie. I first met Dougie shortly after I had started to work in golf back in 2006. I was the enthusiastic golf PR for the CzechTourism board in Prague and Dougie was a “victim” of one of the first golf press trips I organised. There could not have been a bigger contrast between us – he was a quarter of a century ahead of me in the business and I was a newbie, he came over with his broad Glaswegian accent which I could barely understand and I was speaking textbook English, he was on an assignment to cover the St Andrews and Jacques Leglise Trophy whereas I was keen to show him every last castle and museum the Czech Republic had to offer. Yet Dougie respected my work and gave me a chance.
Even now it is hard to believe that we have been meeting ever since always having a good laugh about the Czech “expedition” and even harder that we won´t be meeting anymore. I will miss Dougie´ smiling face, humor and calmness in the general madness of every golf press centre I go to. Dougie, it won´t be the same without you …
