Online form guide proves effective for golf’s Major Championships

Stroke Rank is becoming an increasingly effective form guide for golf’s Major Championships after it successfully ranked three of the top five in the recent Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

The online form guide has been developed by German online marketing specialist and scratch golfer, Falk von Wildenradt, and was launched to the golf community last month.

Special-British-Open

The system uses an algorithm which awards points to players in every tournament played each week on the professional Tours based on their score in relation to par and the average score of the field and then weighted by their finishing position in each tournament.

Ahead of the Open, a special form guide was compiled which weighted the actual form score for the championship by 70% and players’ past performances in the Open by 50%.The result was that Stroke Rank successfully ranked Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia in the top five.

“We are delighted with the way Stroke Rank is developing,” said von Wildenradt. “While it is impossible to give exact predictions about where players will finish in any given tournament, we firmly believe that Stroke Rank can give a very good guide to a player’s form and a good indication of where they are likely to finish in a Major Championship.

“Stroke Rank successfully predicted five of the top ten at the Masters and now three of the top five in the Open. We will continue to work on developing the system and we believe it will become an increasingly useful tool for golf fans and particularly those who enjoy betting on golf.”

Stroke Rank is designed to give an up to date guide to a player’s form. The system has been monitoring player’s performances since 2011 and builds an average of a player’s score for all rounds, their last 32 rounds, last 16 rounds and last eight rounds.

Stroke Rank follows players on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the LPGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and the Champions Tour. It produces special form guides for the Masters, the US Open, the Open Championship, the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

As well as tracking the performance of individual players over recent rounds, Stroke Rank monitors their form against their overall performance level since 2011 to assess whether they are playing better or worse than what is effectively their personal average.

New online form guide for golf’s leading Tours launched

A new online form guide for golf which tracks the week by week performances of players on the world’s leading Tours has been launched.

Stroke Rank awards points to players in every tournament played each week on the professional Tours based on their score in relation to par and the average score of the field and then weighted by their finishing position in each tournament.

The system can be used as a guide to a player’s form heading in to a tournament. For the Masters in April, five of the players rated in Stroke Rank’s top ten finished in the top ten at Augusta.*

Developed by German online marketing specialist and scratch golfer, Falk von Wildenradt, Stroke Rank is designed to give an up to date guide to a player’s form.

For this week’s US Open at Pinehurst, Stroke Rank monitored the last 29,293 rounds of the players in the field and used a special adjusted algorithm which factored in the all-time Stroke Rank of the players as well as their results over their last eight, 16 and 32 rounds. The top ten in the ranking is therefore: Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Adam Scott, Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Joost Luiten, Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood. “Stroke Rank is an excellent form guide for players going into Major Championships and can give a good indication of who might finish in the top ten,” said von Wildenradt. “While it is not possible to predict the winner with any degree of certainty, the system can give an up to date indication of who is most likely to be in contention.

“From an individual player’s perspective, Stroke Rank tracks their performances over their recent rounds and this can be set against their overall performance to assess whether they are playing better or worse than what is effectively their personal average.

“We have been working on developing this system for three years now and feel it is at the stage where we can launch it to the wider golfing community. It is designed to complement the existing world rankings and we see Stroke Rank as a useful tool for those who follow golf and perhaps enjoy the occasional flutter.”

Catalonia hosts the most successful IGTM ever

Catalonia cemented its status as one of Europe’s most exciting emerging golf destinations by playing host to one of the world’s most successful golf tourism events.

The International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) attracted more than 1400 delegates to the PortAventura Convention Centre in Costa Daurada last month, the largest ever turnout in the event’s 16-year history.

Catalonia staged the event as part of its campaign celebrating 100 Years of Great Golf which was devised by the Catalan Tourist Board (CTB) to promote the country as a leading golf destination.

With delegates attending IGTM from all over the world and experiencing the golf and leisure offering of Costa Daurada as well as sampling the local cuisine, culture and nightlife, the event proved hugely successful.

Xavier Espasa Añoveros, General Manager of the Catalan Tourist Board, said, “We are delighted to have hosted such a successful IGTM. It gave us a tremendous platform to promote Catalonia as a truly exciting golf destination. Our aim was to ensure that the many representatives of the golf industry from all over the world who attended the event went away with wonderful impressions of what Catalonia has to offer and that has been achieved.

“Our next objective is to build on this success and use next year’s centenary of the first golf course opening in Catalonia to highlight our pedigree as one of the world’s finest golfing destinations.”

Peter Walton, the Chief Executive of the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO, said, “We would like to congratulate Catalonia on hosting a truly fantastic IGTM. We are fortunate to visit many of the world’s best golf destinations but it is always exciting to go to emerging golf destinations. Catalonia certainly fits into that category. It has some world class courses, hotels and restaurants alongside the rich culture of cities such as Barcelona and Girona. I know our delegates were as impressed as we were with the warm Catalan welcome they received.”

IGTM brings together hundreds of tour operators and key influencers from throughout the international golf travel industry. CTB representatives held 25 formal meetings with companies from 11 different countries throughout the week and many more informal discussions. The agency is confident this will generate business worth hundreds of thousands of euros next year for Catalan golf venues and accommodation providers.

The 100 Years of Great Golf Campaign will continue in 2014 and will utilise a suite of online and print marketing materials to highlight key messages about the quality and range of golf courses and facilities available in Catalonia.

Golf Club Grado rounds off successful season with praise from Ryder Cup star

Golf Club Grado has capped a successful 2013 season, in which it hosted two professional championships, with praise from a renowned Italian Ryder Cup star.

The North Eastern Italian resort hosted the Fruili Venezia Giulia Open on the Alps Tour in June and the Italian PGA Seniors Championship this month attracting praise from none other than three-time Ryder Cup player and five-time European Tour winner Costantino Rocca.

Golf Club Grado

After taking part in the Fruili Venezia Giulia Open, Rocca, who lost out to American John Daly in a play-off at the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, said: “I am fortunate enough to have played many courses in Italy and around the world but this was my first visit to Grado. It is clearly a very good course with excellent practice facilities and a welcoming clubhouse. I look forward to visiting again and playing a round there in future. I would urge people coming to this part of Italy to visit and experience the course for themselves.”

Grado sits on the Adriatic Sea and is one and a half hour’s drive from the wonderful city of Venice. Part of the Tenuta Primero Resort, Grado is renowned for its warm climate and all-year-round golf. The challenging 6650 yard, par 72 Grado championship course sits on the beautiful Grado lagoon and its stunning par three first hole boasts an island green which has led to it being described as the “European Sawgrass” by the golf media.

Rocca, who was part of the winning European Ryder Cup teams at Oak Hill in 1995 and Valderrama in 1997, where he famously defeated Tiger Woods in the singles, added: “I was hugely impressed by Golf Club Grado on my recent visit. The course is challenging but fair and has a real linksy feel, being close to the sea and with the wind coming into play. It has some tough holes and some very memorable ones such as the par three first hole which plays to an island green. The course is suitable for all levels of ability though and would make for an enjoyable few rounds on holiday.”

Ivan Marzola, the President of Golf Club Grado, said: “It has been an excellent season for us and we are delighted to that Costantino was so impressed with Grado. The course is continuing to mature and improve from year to year and makes for a challenging but enjoyable championship venue. It attracted widespread praise from the competitors in both events and from visitors throughout the year. The fact that a player of Costantino’s stature was so impressed is really the icing on the cake for us. We are looking forward to continuing this momentum in 2014.”

To conclude the 2013 golfing season Golf Club Grado offers a wide range of great value holiday packages available from December 2, 2013 until January 6, 2014 and starting at 129 Euros per night in a suite and two green fees. Two nights in a suite and four green fees cost 219 Euros.

The Tenuta Primero resort boasts a private marina which can accommodate yachts of up to 25m in length, a private beach and facilities such as a heated swimming pool, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts and a selection of restaurants and bars. Among the many delights of the resort is also the gourmet restaurant Al Casone which offers authentic Italian fine dining experience ranging among the most highly regarded ones in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.
